Inverted Pleat

Cut-on double inverted box pleat

To begin, you will need a seam that is on the straight of grain.

Next decide what height and width you would like for your pleat. The height is pretty simple but for the width you want to make sure you measure for each side of the box pleat. E.g. For a 3” wide box pleat you will need 1.5” wide pleats.

PatternEditor

Remove the seam allowance. Locate a point from the hemline, as high was you want the pleat.

From that point, make a horizontal line, that is 4 X the width of the pleats. E.g. 4 X 1.5” (see above example) = 6”

From the hemline, make a second horizontal line of the same length and connect both end points.

Divided both horizontal lines into four. ( locate multiple points, select three points)

Connect the dots for the pleats. Add seam allowances and hemline.

The vertical part of the extension is cut on the fold so don’t add seam allowances there.

Construction

Sew the seam till the top of the pleats. Baste the first pleat lines together. Baste the third pleat lines together.

Then fold and edge baste the second and fourth pleat lines seperately.

The pleats should start falling into place. Press.

Stitch a line above the pleats to hold them in place and remove basting.
