I'm trying to make a halter top similar to this. Here is what I have in PE so far. Here is the summary. I have used Helen Joseph-Armstrong's contouring guideline. Let me know what you think and if there are any improvements that can be made.

I just finished the muslin. Tada!
With the wings up -
Wing Bust Halter,first muslin

With the wings halfway down -
Wing Bust Halter,first muslin

With the wings all the way down -
Wing Bust Halter,first muslin

Wing Bust Halter,first muslin

Wing Bust Halter,first muslin

I think I am going to reduce the ease in the waist and hips. I may take the side back panels and do elastic shirring.....or maybe I'll just make it in something that has a little stretch. I still have to figure out a lining and then add halter straps. What do you guys think?

It looks great.  You are really fast.  I'm impressed.  I worry and stew over every little detail and have to answer every what if available.

Thank you so much everyone. This is something I have been trying to draft for at least a year; I'm so glad I'm almost there.

Here is what I have finished. I had a lot of problems with the elastic shirring on the center back panel: skipped stitches. I changed the needle and fiddled with the tension with no luck. I might just omit the shirring, and make a nice belt instead.

It won't let me post pictures right now so I'll try again later.

Whew! So here are some pictures. You can see I still need to do the back panel. Probably won't be shirred. I also need to re-do my lapped side zipper. It was my first lapped zipper and I was so engrossed in the step by step instructions that I completely forgot to check which direction the lap was facing.

Wow, that's going to be so cool!  I know what you mean about being absorbed.  It's hard to make the final product and be learning how to do it at the same time.

That is awesome. You are so creative!!!!!! The shirring problem might just be a needle type problem. Try a microtex or a stretch needle. there are some good tutorials on elastic shirring online but its been so long since I looked I do not remember where. I do have to wind my elastic on the bobin by hand otherwise I thread it through the bobin tension as usual some people say they skip the tension thingy in the bobin and get better results. Keep at it you almost finished. Shirring or not it will be georgeous and very vintage.

Thanks everyone!
Sue - And I was so pleased when I finished the zipper, only to find that it was backwards. I think I will try this tutorial next.

Grandma C - The funny thing is that when I tested for shrinkage I sewed several rows of shirring in my fabric and it all went very smoothly. I don't know what I was doing differently. I think I will simply stay away from elastic shirring until I can get a 2 needle lockstitch machine (the one that does the stitch that looks like a crochet chain?)

EasilyAmewsed - I have actually put this project away. I've thought of so many improvements for the construction of this top; it's hard not to throw it away and start over. But I read in the Advice Contest/Drawing, someone mentioned to ' make it work '. And when I think of it that way, I can't pass up an opportunity to learn. So after a little break, I'll 'make it work'. And you know what, even if I finish this top in December and it's below 20 celsius, I will wear that top to death!

Please don't give up! You've totally inspired me and your fabric is so beautiful. It's looking great! I'm starting draping lessons soon and I'm going to ask my teacher to help me make this.

It's DONE! Thanks for all the encouragement guys! I wore it for the first time at the Red Hot and Blue Rockabilly Weekend in Montreal. I'm having problems uploading photos right now so I'll try again later this week.
