this probably belongs in the finished projects forum but i wanted folks who might be considering a purchase of WG programs to see it.

ella--six years old--drafted and sewed her first dress today.

i forgot to get pictures of us putting the pattern together--i was too !--but you can see the rest.  she created the entire draft herself, choosing the elements, settings, etc, with my guidance--she helped me tape the patterns together--i did the cutting.  then she laid out the pattern on the fabric and weighted it, i cut, then she did ALL the sewing.  she also did the pressing, i had her press the seams to one side since pressing open is fiddly for a child.  the only part i sewed was the neck placket in the back and the loop closure--she even sewed on the shank button.

she was so when it was done that she wouldn't let me press out the folds!

the edges are raw, the seam allowances are all different sizes, but no seamstress has ever been happier with her own creation than ella is with this dress.

Oh Rowena what a wonderful project to begin the new year with your daughter. She looks so "mature" and elegant in her very own dress. I remember the joy I felt when my daughter did her first sewing. I think she was 10 or 11. Two of her brothers also learned at the same time because they were intrigued by my computerized sewing machine and wanted to take it for a run. I insisted that they get a "drivers' license" first. It was a great experience for all of us.

I know that Ella will continue to create even more garments. I look forward to following her career in fashion

Ella,
The fit and choice of fabric is exquisite! You are way ahead of my darling daughter who is 25! I bought her the sewing machine....
Rowena, congratulations, and enjoy. It goes by like the blink of an eye.... you are doing an excellent job.

TOO CUTE for words. Looks like you have an aspiring model as well as a designer/dressmaker on the way up.

It is so great to see a young, (very young), person interested in sewing.  She really did a great job.  I love her choice of fabric.  She can only go up from here.  At this age,  her imagination wil allow her to be a great designer.  She is so cute.  They grow up too fast.  Having the pictures, (and saving that great dress), will be fun to look at later when she is in college.

Now that my GD is in college,we got a kick out of looking at some old movies when she was just three.  She loved her twrilly dresses that I made for her.  And she still has a well worn Snow White dress that I made.

How wonderful for Ella to have a mother who encourages and supports her in creative efforts. You are building in her the confidence to try new things, and to succeed in everything she tries.

Congratulations on your mothering.

Ella - your dress looks fabulous.

Rowena -- you are a great mom. This would have been a dream come true for me at age 6.

Ella is as intrepid as her mother.

Rowena, thank YOU for sharing all your enormous knowledge with all of us, and for sharing Ella. It's been such great fun to see your charming daughter grow up from being a little bean to the wonderful, whimsical, and amazing child she is now. I so love how much respect you have for her, and the room you and Rudi have given her to develop her own way. It's an inspiration.

Rowena, this was the sweetest thing that I have seen. I wish that I had a little one that wanted to sew and design. Enjoy her now!! They grow up so very quickly.
And she is beautiful.

Have been away from Forum and sewing for three years. Cannot believe Ella is so grown up. She's lovely and both she and her dress are wonderful creations.

I am so glad you posted this! I am debating on the software. My 8 year old loves to design and sew and I think you pretty much cinched it for me!

How absolutely wonderful! I remember making my first projects at about 8 using my Mom's old Singer treddle converted to electric. I did a lot of sewing on that thing. The only thing I wanted for HS graduation was a new sm & so bot one just like my Aunt's with my money gifts. It was so fancy! It had cams & ZigZag!. So many decorator stitches -- about 8. There's one thing always about those old machines -- they always worked! Sewed through denim & everything. Hardly ever broke a needle or replaced one!

Ella is a treasure. You're a wonderful Mom. Linda Wiseman
