Yes, wrap the thread around the bobbin a few times. Put the end of the thread over the end of the bobbin and put it in the winder. Push the winder to meet the handwheel. Do you know to release the clutch so that the machine does not run while you are winding a bobbin?

yes to releasing the clutch, this one is easy to manipulate.

i'm going to take a break from the sewing machine and go watch ella and rudi play, he gave her a fossil dig kit and apparently they just unearthed a stegosaurus!  LOL  i'll be back.  thank you!

edited to add:  there is a hole in the end of the bobbin spindle that looks like it should hold the thread tail--like on a round bobbin.  is that correct?

Yes, you could use the hole, but it isn't necessary. Try it and see. Have fun with Ella and the dinosaurs.

I am so for Ella, I can't wait for you to get this machine up and running. Glad she is enjoying the process of "figuring it all out".

Have fun girls, Susan

we got the bobbin wound and loaded, we got the machine threaded, and we sewed!!!  the stitch quality is excellent, the best straight stitch in the house.

ella is over the moon .  she is planning to finish her quilt by machine.  THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!  between this and the wishing well, i feel like mother of the year!

I'm for you and Ella to have the sewing machine up and working! What girl (of any age) wouldn't love a cool pink sewing machine. I'm very impressed with Ella's teaching skills, definately following in her DM footsteps.

This is very similar to my grandmother's treadle machine I have. And....I have the manual! I have it scanned and on my computer. If you would like it, I would be happy to send it to you. It has the same bobbin set up etc.
The manual is hysterical. Nothing politically correct about it. The way things used to be!
Sorry, I haven't read the list since before Christmas.

Thanks for sharing the video of Ella.  She is so cute, and I enjoyed watching it.  This morning after sewing a seam, I said to myself, "Now check your stitches and see what a good job you did."

Loved the video of Ella sewing on her own machine. Hope I can make one of my granddaughter doing the same in the future!

How fun, for both you and Ella.

Neither of my sons was interested in sewing (I tried with the first one!) but now I have a daughter-in-law who sews a bit.  It's been fun to have someone to share my interest and tools with, including finding a new home for my 20-year old New Home machine.  New Year's Day Thea and I spent several hours tandem sewing on slacks.  She had not made any before, and wants to learn how.  I suggested she could watch me and take notes, sew them while I guided her, or bring her machine over and we work simultaneously on the same style.  She selected the third choice, and she felt like it was helpful both watching and doing.  I was happy because of her interest and dedication, and now I have a new pair for me nearly made, too!

I'm trying to show Ella, in the dress she made, to a co-worker. Where is the post about it.

Well, I missed your reply last night but I will be back at work tomorrow. The dress and model are too cute. My compliments to you on your ability to teach and allowing the child to learn in her own way. That is not an easy feat. Ella is truely blessed to have a great mom and dad.
