Have any of you noticed the new policy at JoAnn Fabrics and Hancock Fabrics about how they cut your fabric?

They have to cut the exact amount that you ask for now.  They used to give a little extra, but not any more.

I have noticed several times that I end up getting LESS than what I paid for.  Inevitably one or both sides are not cut straight, so I end up with less than the full width when I lay it on my cutting mat.

I bought 1/2 yd yesterday to make a baby gift, and I needed to cut a rectangle that was 18" wide, but I only had 17 1/2".

Is it just me, or does this aggravate you too?

I'm thankful that I have fabric stores nearby, and I understand that they are in the business to make money, but still...shouldn't we get at least what we pay for?!

Thanks for listening to me vent!

 Jill

I have had that same problem in other stores as well. It makes me really angry too.

Same here in Dallas. .. . I spoke to manager and he informed me that corp. policy was that all fabrics must be measured from their longest edge with only one-half a thumbnail width when ordering more than a yard. He said I should merely account for uneven edges by calculating 1/4 yard extra, at least. Too bad not more fabric opportunities here - I've found Fabric.com very generous in their cuts.

I haven't bought fabric at either of those stores in ages, most if it is from online sources. Thanks for the heads up on this.

When I buy fabric at Joann. I help the cutter hold it down and always inspect the underside for eveness. If I have any doubts, I ask them to remeasure the cut before leaving the cutting table. I think they hate to see me waiting in line.

I like StMikes answer to the problem. I suppose if they get to know you they will find it to their advantage to cut at least more accuratel

Only one reason I rarely shop at Joann.

Jo-Ann's fabrics must be losing a lot of business. Have you noticed the increase in advertising and coupons? I've seen/received both from Threads & Sew News magazines, Von's and our local newspaper recently. This is new. I rarely go to Jo-Ann's as I'm always disappointed.

Lincraft is a major fabric retailer here in Australia. If I go there on a weekday I find that the permanent staff are quite generous with their cutting and will give you the end of the roll for free or at a discount. The Saturday girls seem to follow the rules more. Maybe they're worried about getting in trouble. I asked for 4m of sparkly stuff when I was making 'Elsa' capes for the children at pre-school. There was about 12" left at the end of the roll and the girl cut it off and threw it in a bin!

I work at Hancock Fabrics. When I cut fabric that is uneven, I straighten the fabric and line the shorter end up with the cutting groove. That means you might get a little more. If there is less than 12" left at the end, we give you the option to buy it at 75% off. 13 to 53" is 50% off. Some fabric, such is fleece is sometimes nearly impossible to straighten, bu't I do my best. I measure odd amounts (not 1/8 increments) when asked and use the cheat sheets to convert them to decimal. I do my best to be sure you get what you ask for. I don't believe I'm the exception to thei rule. I, too, miss the day when the store would throw in the extra couple of inches. However, fabric stores, like any other store, need to control shrinkage. By the way, the yard is measured from the bottom of the cutting groove, not the sides. I am not shorting you when I measure this way, even if you would like for me to measure from the outer edges. OK, only 1 customer accused me of shorting her because I measured from the bottom of the grooves, but I didn't appreciate it. I really want my guests (correct term) to get what they pay for.

I agree with StMike, and if the fabric is off, ask them to recut it or don't buy it. The manager who said to get an extra 1/4 yard is not very customer friendly, and I wouldn't shop in his store! Why should you pay more because they can't cut straight. I have had fabric re-cut before when it's short. I have started ordering on line because of being shorted.

The cutting groove is a V shaped indentation in the cutting table that is used as a guide for the scissors to cut along.

well, that is 1 example of how our local chain is in out to lunch. We rely on our cutters' eyes to cut straight. We are not allowed to touch the fabric while they cut, no matter how unwieldy. They say loudly that it's a health and safety issue. Bull. Handwritten renewals for frequent shoppers every year. Unbelievable.

I shop at JoAnn's when I have a coupon, but then only for tools, storage, notions and things like that. I will buy fabric from Hancock's, but only to make a mock-up of something I intend to make in a much better fabric after I have the fit perfected.
