I found several "Junk Programs" installed on the new computer.  Two were random ad generators - very annoying.

Open computer to Desk Top.

Swish in the lower right corner and select settings.

Go to Control Panel

Look down the list of programs.  If there is something you don't recognize, search the name.  My Internet Explorer was popping so many ads and redirecting searches I had to use my tablet.

An example

Highlightly was listed.

I did a search for Highlightly and found this info.  There was also a post telling me why I wanted unwanted ads too.

Remove from the Control Panel.  Easy, just select and uninstall.  You do not need to buy a program to remove these programs.  Uninstall and when finished run your virus software just to check.

I uninstalled several unwanted programs.  I didn't keep a list because I thought about writing up the info for the forum after I did it.

Thanks Karen, this is something I would never think of looking into. I'm just not bold enough.

If you are getting ads or being redirected if you look carefully, usually at the bottom, in very very tiny print you see a name of the program doing this.

This has been a real eye opener for me.  No wonder people have problems getting new computers up and running.

My last new computer was a Custom Build Dell tower and it only came with what I ordered.

I know many of you are getting new computers so plan to continue with a series of posts on getting setup.

It's so annoying that computer companies do this. Thanks for the tutorial, Karen.

Could you take the computer to a tech shop and have them reformat the hard drive and then install a vanilla versions of Windows? People who fix computers have those plain, vanilla Windows versions, at least they used to. It might cost a few bucks, but it might be worth it.
