I want to make a fleece vest for my mother-in-law, who needs easy-to-use fasteners. Most of the fleece garments I see have separating zippers, which I think might be hard for her. And velcro catches on fleece in the laundry. Are buttonholes possible in fleece? Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Nancy

Does she have enough hand strength for snaps? If so, that's probably your best option. Use a piece of interfacing behind the snap to support the fleece.

Or, use magnetic closures like you can find for purses. Again, support the fabric so the pieces don't stretch out the fleece.

Thanks, Welmoed! Either snaps or magnets would mean drafting as for a button-front (overlapping) closure, so this will let me go ahead and draft and plan the embroidery placement tonight.

Last winter I made a fleece robe and used a print flannel for the facings. I attached soft interfacing to the facing and then made the buttonholes. It has worked just fine the buttonholes have not stretched and yet the front of the robe has remained soft. That should support fasteners of almost any type.

I used slot buttonholes for the sweater knit fleece jacket in my album. Instructions were in Threads magazine, but might be able to find them online.
