On Friday afternoon I was entering my stuff into the Montgomery County Fair when I was approached by one of the volunteers. She said she was looking for someone to fill in for a sudden drop-out in the Project Runway contest for the following day. I had heard about the contest but had decided not to enter; it would be nine hours of sewing to create an outfit, which would then be modeled in a runway show and judged (top prize: a $300 G Street gift certificate!). Before my rational brain could kick in, I found myself saying yes.
My team partners were Audrey and her 12-year-old daughter Spydaer. Audrey had some sewing experience but nothing extensive; without a partner she admitted she wouldn't be able to produce much more than a simple elastic-waist skirt and a top. I told her I would help IF she agreed to let me draft the pattern with PMB. She jumped at the chance, so I measured her in the parking lot (got some interesting stares from the security guard!) and dashed home to draft the patterns.
I drafted a top with Knits: a Crossed Panel style front with a plain back. With PMB I drafted a simple box jacket and Culotte pants. Then I did a sun hat and tie bag with Wild Things. I printed everything out (thank heavens for my plotter!!) and headed for the fairgrounds bright and early the next morning.
We started at 9:00 a.m. and worked all day, with only a half hour break for lunch. Spydaer trimmed all the pattern pieces and did a lot of the pressing. We had no time at all for muslins, of course, so I crossed my fingers and trusted the program. But everything fit perfectly! Audrey even declared that the pants were the most comfortable she's ever had.
We didn't win, but we did get fourth place, which included a ribbon and a $25 G Street gift certificate, which I told Audrey to keep (along with all the leftover fabric) because I sure as heck didn't need any of it!
Anyway, here is a picture of Audrey on the runway. More pictures and the full story are on my blog.

Great job - the pants even have pockets!

You made very good design choices for a project limited by time and lack of muslins.
