I finished Diana's Cruella DeVil costume this morning! The last piece was the iconic white fur coat with red lining. This was the first time I've made a garment out of faux fur... my sewing room is covered with little white tufts.

To make the coat, I ended up using the Sheath draft, because I like the "casual" draft shape (mostly rectangular) and that wasn't available in the Jackets section. Shawl collar with a neckline width of 2 and a collar width of 5, hip ease of 8, straight sleeve with a length of 15.

She's very happy with the result and even posed for pictures in the 95-degree heat. Boy, I hope it's not this hot next weekend!!

More pics and details on my blog!

Perfect shoes, too! I hope you had power to the AC while you were working on that coat! Any advice on sewing fake fur?

I was reading your blog on the costumes and laughing hysterically. My son wanted to know what i could be laughing about on my sooo boring sewing lists. I showed him your costumes and he was impressed.
Zombie dog was a hoot. Dog purse is the best.
you should win an award for this, sorry dog lovers, but this is just too creative for words.
You did this all in the record heat too. I am completely impressed by your creative engineering.

Oh my--what AMAZING work on those costumes! The snake staff was enough to make me feel nervous--it would scare ME if I ran into it & it wouldn't even have to be dark outside!

Any advice on sewing fake fur?

Nancy

Yeah. Try not to.

All kidding aside, sewing fur-to-fur wasn't bad at all. Sewing the slippery lining to the fur... That was another matter. I used more pins on this job than I usually do and still had to go very slowly to keep the darned stuff from crawling. Keeping the fur side towards the feed dogs helped. Also, have a vacuum cleaner handy. There were tufts of white fur EVERYWHERE.

Thanks to all for the kind comments! I have made more progress and should have everything done by tomorrow... I hope. Not much left to sew and the hard stuff, like the headpieces, is done.
