Extreme Veteran Posts: 552 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cedar Falls, Iowa | I just had to share this with people who would understand. I went to an auction today because they had an estate ad in Craigslist and it include LOTS of fabric. I scored 23.6 yds of 15 oz stiff denim, 12.5 yds of 7 oz brushed denim, 9 yds of heavy brown denim, 5 yds of heavy stiff corduroy, and 12 yds of (junk) dark orange loose fabric (for curtains?) for a total of TWENTY dollars. Let's see, ignoring the orange stuff, that's $0.40/yd! Whee! Now when I'm making jeans and they say make your wearable muslin out of a similar but less expensive fabric, I definitely have inexpensive denim. I might end up having to make curtains for the small bedroom out of the orange stuff, unless someone of you has a more pressing use for it.

I purchased a bunch of heavy poplin in a package years ago that contained some burnt orange fabric I would never wear, so i embroidered and made some cushions for our wicker outside furniture. (I'm really not into thinking about things that burn right now) Here is a link to a photo of the cushion. I used Sandra Betzina's home dec book as a guide. http://www.pbase.com/kuby/image/122168549

I forgot to mention, I also got 6 yards of a lightweight fleece-like material, but only fuzzy on one side. And it's a purple (more what Crayola would call Red-Violet). Looks like something that could be used for pocket linings, among other things. Anyone need it?

Extreme Veteran Posts: 386 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Canberra, Australia | Lucky duck! Is that just an Aussie term I wonder? I got lucky about 4 years ago when my Pastor's wife's mother's friend - there's some degrees of seperation - though i am actually friends with my Pastor's MIL - decided to reduce her stash and I got 4 of those red, white and blue stripey bags of fabric for free? Hope you know what I mean by those bags. People use them when they go camping and stuff and they have a zip and handles. Maybe I photo? I'm trying to down-load photos, because I've done quite a lot recently. I keep getting a message saying there is an error. but they're already in an acceptable format and less than 4km or mb. Will investigate further on the weekend. That was a long answer - sorry! Sarah

Extreme Veteran Posts: 552 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cedar Falls, Iowa | "Lucky Duck" is a common phrase here, too. I'm trying not to turn into a fabric hoarder, HOWEVER, there is a garage sale (tag sale, whatever term anyone uses) near me on Friday and they are advertising hundreds of yards of fabric, as well as sewing notions. Definitely have to hit that before I got to work!

Elite Veteran Posts: 902 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Wichita, Kansas | Lucky duck isn't just an Aussie term. My DGS has a stuffed duck named Lucky Ducky. LD and DGS recently had to go to timeout in separate spots. It seems DGS hit DGD at LD's suggestion. Here I was patting myself on the back for finding poly wool for 70% off of 9.99 at Hancocks yesterday. When I went to have it cut, I found it had been marked down to 4.95. The 70% off applied to the marked down price. $1.48/yd. I got 4 yards instead of the planned 3. Less that $6.50 including tax. Now I'm off to check Craigs list.

Elite Veteran Posts: 681 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I was mildy envious - until I translated metres (or yards) into sewing time. For me, at one garment every six-eight weeks, that's years of sewing in just one purchase. I am still working my way through a $50 purchase made 4 years ago. More than half of it is still sitting in the stash. I did read of one lady who believes in reincarnation just because its the only way she will ever get through her stash. Except that if you were reincarnated as a sewer you'![]()

Extreme Veteran Posts: 552 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cedar Falls, Iowa | ROTFL - My impression is that reincarnation usually brings you back as someone different, fortunately! My garment rate is about one every 2 weeks, though I find that spring/summer garden season has brought my sewing almost to a stand-still. Hrmph. I'm learning to make my own jeans, so hope to eat my way through that pile of denim. Besides, it was cheap. ;-)
