Okay y'all.  I call this "Masterpiece for my Mom".  Sewing good quality silk or wool is so much fun. And Mom's pleasure in her grandmother-of-the-groom dress is gratifying.  For more pictures and details, visit www.flyingember.com/stitching.

I spent a lot of design time on this outfit.  There was only 2 yards of embroidered silk, and two yards of wool gabardine to go with it.  The wool was shorter with a big chunk cut out so I returned it and switched to silk dupioni for the dress.  Yardage Calculator allowed me to determine that the dress would NOT work with the wool and how much silk to order online.  The pattern I designed with a lapel collar didn't fit so back to the computer and I designed a revere lapel.  Yardage calculator helped here, too.  I'm actually glad the lapel collar got changed because the revere was a lot easier to sew the coordinating piping around.  Notice also I used piping to tie together the crosswise bands I added to lengthen the jacket and sleeves.

We wanted the dress to be fairly long but I wanted to give Mom walking room, so I drafted the sheath with the princess panel lines in front, and added pleats using Pattern Editor.  I placed the front dress pieces together across the width of the fabric so there are no seams on the inset pleats.

The back is a basic sheath with darts.  The three-quarter sleeves came out too tight after I trimmed them down to fit under the jacket, so I added a triangular godet at the hem.  PMB did a beautiful job drafting to fit Mom's 88 year-old body with it's bit of dowager hump and sagging middle.

Now I'm working on the wedding dress because I'm working around when the out-of-state bride can be here.  After that, it's my dress for the wedding in May.

Beautiful, beautiful job Phyllis. Thanks on behalf of all us aging moms for the thought that you have given to the simple fact that aging has nothing to do with losing your need to look good and be fashionable.

Clothing that fits perfectly and keeps in mind the currant fashion of the day are important aspects of our views of ourselves. Can't do with out them..

Great job!

Coopie

Thanks, everyone.  The bride likes this fabric better than mine, and my other daughter-in-law and I have told Mom she will outshine the bride!

Aside from the gorgeous fabric, my favorite detail is the 4 pleats at the bottom of the dress, built into the Princess Panel.

And I didn't post it because it's a surprise for Christmas, but I made Mom a matching clutch bag.

Such a lovely outfit Phyllis.
The pleating is perfect to show off the dupioni.
A clutch is a great idea and a wonderful gift.

Here's another photo that shows the pleats better, plus a jpeg of the pattern draft with notes added. It's hard to believe Mom is nearly 89, isn't it?

p.s.  The pattern fronts fit going across because the silk was 54" wide.  It's from silkbaron.com.
