I finally sewed something again, and it felt so good to be “back.” Here is the finished item, a pair of knee-length jeans I made for my 12-year-old daughter in CP 4. I designed and cut them out a full year ago (!), so I am very glad her adolescent growth spurt hasn’t set in and they fit. Here are details:
Garment type: pants
Style: jeans
Waistline: Elastic back
Front Darts: 1
Leg Style: Tapered (which turned out too full, so I sewed out the extra, achieving a “slim leg” style)
Waist Ease: 0.5
Hip Ease: 2
Crotch Ease: 0.25

I used a pair of RTW jeans as my pattern with respect to many design details, such as pockets and yoke, which I drafted by hand on paper (tracing the original RTW), and also the length of zipper flap and hem. I eased in the dart, which wasn’t the best choice for denim, but the wrinkles are not discernible to anybody but me. I used upholstery thread for the top stitching and a remnant of light-weight cotton fabric for the inside of the front pocket. The back waistband has 5/8 buttonhole elastic, which is fastened to 2 small buttons on the inside of the waistband to allow for quick adjustment when necessary.
This was a lot of fun to make. The one mistake I made is I drafted the pants from the NATURAL waist down, instead of a bit lower at the PANTS waist. As Louisa wears them at her pants waist, there is a bit of extra fabric, which puddles in the front, but it’s not a big problem. Otherwise, the fit would have been perfect. She has worn them a couple of times already, so I think they met with her approval.
Knee-length denim pants are a good choice in our climate. The classrooms are often air-conditioned to freezing levels, but outside temperatures are too warm for full-length pants, so the knee length is a good compromise.
Here is a picture, and a few more close ups are in my album, http://www.wildginger.com/forums/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?albumi... Please ignore the unruly zipper flap; after I took the photos I realized that she hadn’t zipped up the pants all the way.

They look excellent; no wonder she wants to wear them.

Hmm, good work. I must get back to sewing, especially for DGD.

Love the pants.  I can see why she wants to wear them.

Thanks for all your kind words. The pants are definitely a keeper. I am no longer counting how often she wears them. Whew.

Now I am working on a blouse for me in PMB 5.
