What I do - is make an oval about 3" long and maybe 2" wide with the same seam allowance as the legs and body, 3/8" or 1/4 seam allowance , not more. On the gusset's long sides, mark at 1 1/2", the centres, on the left and right sides, and at the F and B points where the gusset's seam allowances meet. On the unitard, sew the legs all the way up, but sew the body Centre F and Centre B seams to 1 1/2 inches from the join to the legs. Match the centres of the long sides of the gusset to the leg seams and open the CF and CB ends of the bodice and sew them *to the sides of the gusset*, not to themselves. Next time you might need a longer or shorter or wider gusset. This 3x2 shape will give more length, 2", to the inner legs, but not the F and B length eg a wedgie.
It looks complicated before you do it, but it really makes something much more wearable.
